Box Score BANGOR, Maine – David Clough (Mt. Vernon, Maine) headed home the golden goal 103:08 after the opening tap to deliver Maine Maritime its first men's soccer victory over Husson since October 22, 2005. Clough cashed in on Maine Maritime's sixth corner of the night to deliver the 2-1 win at Boucher Field.
Clough's finish finished a seven-year drought that saw Maine Maritime go 0-5-2 against its opponents up the Penobscot. Gabriel Warren (Edgecomb, Maine) served up the corner for the 6'4" sophomore-transfer's first goal in a Mariners uniform, moving Maine Maritime to 2-1 on the season. Husson slipped to 1-2.
The Mariners struck first when David Lord (Kenduskeag, Maine) played a ball across the box for Benjamin Russell (Farmington, Maine), who went to the back post for the 1-0 lead. It held only briefly as the Eagles' Phil Frost finished off a cartwheel throw-in to draw the teams even early in the 18th minute. The keepers conspired from there to force the pair of overtime periods.
Mason Smith stopped seven shots for Husson, while William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) stopped three for the Mariners. Maine Maritime fired 15 shots in Smith's direction, while the defense limited Husson to 11 advances.
Friday's game did not count towards the teams' North Atlantic Conference (NAC) records. Husson was picked to defend its NAC title, taking eight first place votes, while Maine Maritime was selected to finish fifth overall by the league's head coaches. Husson and Maine Maritime will square off on Boucher Field again in 15 days.
The Mariners return to action on Sunday at Husson, where they will face Mass.-Boston in the New Balance Challenge Cup.
