Soucy's Goal Is Golden; Mariners Move into First Place

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – Bryan Soucy's score just two minute into the second overtime lifted Maine Maritime to a 2-1 win over Maine-Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference men's soccer game Wednesday. The Mariners improved to 8-4-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the NAC. The Mariners moved into sole possession of first place in the NAC standings with 19 points thanks to the win over the Beavers, but MMA has completed more of its conference slate than any other team in the league.

UMaine-Farmington dropped to 2-10-1 overall with the loss, 0-4-1 in conference play.

Soucy netted the game winner in the 103rd minute, taking advantage of a UMaine-Farmington turnover deep in its defensive third and finishing with a blast from just outside the top of the 18-yard box. Soucy's shot cleared the hands of outstretched UMF keeper Derek Reilly and sailed into the upper left corner of the goal, giving Maine Maritime the win.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, on Chad McDonnell's goal from just inside the left corner of the 18-yard box. McDonnell lofted a shot over Reilly and into the far side of the goal, off a field-width diagonal cross from David Lord.

That 1-0 advantage lasted through the first half and into the second, until UMaine-Farmington knotted the game at 1-1 in the 51st minute. Junior Jordan Luks came charging through the center of the 18 to attack a corner kick by senior Jordan Kim, and headed a ball downward into the six-yard box that bounced high over the Maine Maritime defenders and into the goal. The goal was Luks' first of the season.

Maine Maritime held a decisive 26-11 advantage in total shots, including a 5-1 margin in the two overtime periods. The Mariners also had eight corner kicks to the Beavers' four.

Reilly finished with 12 saves over 102:05 played in the UMaine-Farmington goal, while Maine Maritime keeper Jesse Perkins charted three saves.

Maine Maritime will host UMaine-Machias in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Castine.
