Box Score CASTINE, Maine -- Jonathan Reeks netted a second half goal Wednesday against Maine-Machias.
Then he didn't.
Then he did.
Almost 11 minutes after Reeks had what was an insurance goal waved off in the 78th minute, the sophomore buried in the game-winner, off a pass from Nicholas George, in the 89th minute to lift Maine Maritime to a 2-1 win in a men's soccer contest. The win improved the Mariners to 9-4-2, while the Clippers dropped to 18-3.
It was the final regular season home game for seniors George, Benjamin Cummings, Chad McDonnell and Gabriel Warren.
Reeks' non-goal occurred when Alfedo Palacios' shot bounced around the Mariners box and appeared to be cleared by a defender before it crossed the line. Reeks found himself all alone and netted a breakaway goal only to have it nullified when the officials convened and awarded Palacios the score. The goal evened the game at 1-1.
The Mariners went ahead early in the game when Jay Madison made a defender miss in front of the box and fired a shot from the left to the right side of goal.
Maine Maritime had one more clean look on goal in the 40th minute when Warren's shot was stopped by Luis Herrera.
Kyle Haslam fired two shots on goal early in the second half but both were stopped by Herrera. The Clippers managed a shot on goal in the the 57th minute but Cummings' leaping stop kept the Mariners ahead 1-0.
Maine Maritime held a 10-4 advantage on shots and 3-0 on corners. Cummings earned his first win with one save, while Herrera stopped six shots in the loss.
The Mariners, currently the No. 1 team in the NAC, finish the regular season Saturday, 3:30 p.m., at New England College.
