Mariners Fall To Chargers in Shootout

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime and Colby-Sawyer battled scoreless for 110 minutes before the Chargers prevailed in the shootout, 4-3, in a North Atlantic Conference semifinal match Wednesday. The Chargers advanced to Saturday's championship game against Thomas, a 2-0 winner of Castleton.

Kyle Haslam started the shootout for Maine Maritime (11-4-3) with a shot to the right, Alex Ortega followed for Colby-Sawyer (9-7-3)  with a shot over the cross bar and Evan Turmenne missed to the left. Rick Prindiville gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead with a shot to the left corner and Nicholas George evened the shootout with a goal to the top right.

Zach Anderson's shot found the back of the net to give Colby-Sawyer a 2-1 lead before Bryan Soucy tied it with a goal to the right side. Carlton Wheeler-Omiunu put the Chargers ahead with a shot to the right side and Matt Leblanc evened it again with a goal to the left.

Andrew Clothier sealed the win for Colby-Sawyer on the final penalty kick when he netted a shot to the left side.

The Mariners opened the second overtime with three shots in three minutes but none were on goal. Anderson was stopped by Jesse Perkins in the 104th minute before Nick Austin got piece of Jonathan Reeks' shot in the 109th minute.

Haslam was stopped in the 92nd minute by Austin before he sent a ball towards the net in the 93rd minute that George headed just above the crossbar.

Both teams missed scoring chances by inches in the first half. George sent a header just above the bar in the 17th minute before Wheeler-Omiunu fired a shot that hit the front of the far left post.

Maine Maritime held a slight 18-15 shot advantage and 5-3 on corner kicks. Perkins finished with five saves and Austin recorded seven.
