Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine -- University of Southern Maine broke a 2-2 first half deadlock, with 10 unanswered goals, which led to a 16-7 win in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Saturday. The Huskies improved to 1-4 while the Mariners fell to 1-3.
USM jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Alex Hermes netted two straight goals to even the game at 2-2 with 5:04 left in the opening quarter. The Huskies responded with 10 straight scores, spanning nearly 19 minutes, to lead 12-2 with 12:28 left in the third.
Hermes stopped the bleeding with a score at 7:11, and after Ryan Foley made it 13-3, Nick Betti found the back of the net for MMA with 2:41 left in the third. Thomas Houle's man-up score early in the the fourth put the Mariners within nine, 14-5, but Kyle Baker quickly answered for the Huskies. A.J. Larrabee matched Baker's score with 10:22 left before Foley and Baker went back-to-back to keep USM ahead 16-6 with 5:12 left in the game. Bronson Guimond netted a late goal for the Mariners.
The Mariners open North Atlantic Conference play Saturday, 1 p.m., at New England College.
