Bucs Survive Mariners; Win Admirals Cup

PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine Maritime scored four goals in the final eight minutes, but fell one score shy as Massachusetts Maritime edged the Mariners, 11-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse game Sunday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. The Bucs won the Admirals Cup and improved to 2-2 while Maine Maritime fell to 0-6.

Nick Betti and Tom Houle led the Mariners with three goals each, Nick Snelling added two and Bronson Guimond and Cameron Wyman one.

John Hojnoski and Sean Staples paced the Bucs with three goals each, Drew Prowse and Dylan Freudenberg two, and Anthony Kurylak one.

Mass. Maritime took a 10-6 lead when Hojnoski hooked up with Prowse with 10:26 left in the game. Guimond and Betti netted back-to-back shots to make it 10-8 with 4:06 left in the fourth. Staples gave the Bucs some breathing room with an unassisted score at 2:46 before Betti and Snelling scored 24 seconds apart to get the Mariners within one, 11-10, with 1:15 left. Mass. Maritime won the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over. The Mariners had possession with under 30 seconds left, cleared the ball, but turned it over with 15 seconds left in the game.

The Bucs started the game with a 3-0 lead when Kurylak, Hojnoski and Freudenberg scored. Houle netted consecutive shots for Maine Maritime, and Betti one, to even the game early in the second quarter. Staples and Houle traded goals late in the second quarter before Hojnoski found the back of the net to give Mass. Maritime a 5-4 halftime lead.

Betti found Wyman early in the third quarter to tie the game for a third time, 5-5, with 13:18 remaining. Staples and Freudenberg netted consecutive shots to end the third with Mass. Maritime ahead 7-5.

Larrabee hooked up with Snelling early in the fourth to put the Mariners within one, 7-6, before the Bucs scored three straight to set up the final nine minutes of the game.

Paul Painten stopped 11 shots in goal to earn the win. Erik Milles saved 16 shots for the Mariners.

Maine Maritime returns to the field Friday hosting Thomas at 7 p.m.
