Box Score BANGOR, Maine -- Maine Maritime shutout Southern Maine 4-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match Friday at the Second Annual New Balance Challenge Cup hosted by Husson University. The Mariners improved to 1-1-1 while the Huskies dropped to 0-3.
The Mariners went ahead in the 22nd minute when Jonathan Reeks sprinted down the right side and deposited the ball in the left side of the net. Reeks struck again in the 33rd minute off a pass from Kyle Haslam to give Maine Maritime a 2-0 lead.
Nicholas George scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute and Chad McDonnell made it 4-0, off a pass by Tristan Richards, when he drew the keeper out of the net and scored in the 86th minute.
The Mariners had a goal dismissed late in the game when Jay Madison netted a header but was called offsides.
Maine Maritime goalkeeper Jesse Perkins made four saves and picked up his first win of the season.
The Huskies saw an early injury to goalkeeper Matthew Willis. Willis allowed one goal with one save before leaving the game in the 30th minute. Adam Verreault replaced Willis in net, allowing three goals and stopping three shots.
The Mariners return to the pitch Saturday, 5p.m., against Gordon at Husson.
