Mariners Fall to Thomas

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Mariners fell to North Atlantic Conference foe Thomas College on Saturday afternoon, 3-1.

The Terriers got things going quickly when Dakota Duplissie fired a shot off the crossbar, but followed through on his shot and put home the rebound just 2:23 into the match for the 1-0 lead.

Both teams traded shots for the remainder of the first half as Maine Maritime (7-6-1, 4-2-1 NAC) had 13 shots with six on goal and Thomas (7-3-2, 4-1-1) accumulated 10 total with four on goal.

Joakim Sternas made four saves in the first 20 minutes and made six overall for Thomas in the first half to keep the Mariners off the scoreboard.

In the second half, the Mariners tied the score up at 1-1 on a tremendous diving header by Ike Doiron (Wilton, Maine) from Gabriel Warren (Edgecomb, Maine).

The Terriers wasted no time responding, as Duplissie grabbed his second goal of the game, this time from Khamisi Lightbourne on a cross to put Thomas on top, 2-1. Three minutes later, Tre Ming dribbled past defenders to create separation and fired a shot by Mariner keeper Zachery Elwell (Readfield, Maine) to extend the Terrier lead to 3-1.

Maine Maritime held a 23-16 shot advantage, but Sternas denied them on eight of nine shots on goal. Elwell ended the afternoon with three saves in net for the Mariners.

The Mariners will return to action next weekend when they will host Castleton on Saturday and Green Mountain College on Sunday to wrap up the regular season.
