Mariners Fall in NAC Quarterfinal Match

BANGOR, Maine -- Husson University men's soccer defeated Maine Maritime Academy 3-1 in a North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal match at Boucher Field on Friday night.

In a tough, physical game, Husson took the lead in the 12th minute as a ball deflected off a Mariner defender for an own goal. The Mariners responded five minutes later when Marine Engineering Technology major Tom Samson (Waterville, Maine) scored a goal on a pass from David Clough (Mount Vernon, Maine). The teams remained tied for the rest of the half, with Maine Maritime holding the edge in shots, 10-6. 

The Eagles scored in the 66th minute on a shot from Stephen Berenyi. The Mariners continued to fight but Husson extended their lead and closed out the game when Andy Stevick scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

Samson led the Mariners with four shots, all on goal, while Phil Frost led the Eagles with seven shots, five on goal.

Mariner goalkeeper and Marine Engineering Operations major Marshall Spear (Rockport, Maine) made nine saves in the loss, and Husson's goalkeeper Brian Potter made nine saves in the victory.

Maine Maritime finishes the year with an 8-8-1 overall record.
