Mariners Shutout Eagles to Remain Unbeaten in the NAC

Box Score
BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy defeated NAC rival Husson University on Saturday night at Boucher Field, 2-0.

In a hard fought battle the two teams sat scoreless for the first 52 minutes of play, but the quick Mariner offense finally wore down the Eagles defense.

In the 53rd minute during a scramble in front of the Husson net, reigning NAC Rookie of the Week Tom Samson (Waterville, Maine) headed in a pass from Jonathan Reeks (Bedford, N.H.), beating Husson keeper Brian Potter to the far right side, giving the Mariners the 1-0 lead.

Just under two minutes later Reeks grabbed an insurance goal, and his team-leading ninth goal of the season when he headed in score. Currently Reeks leads the North Atlantic Conference in points this season with 20.

The Mariners defense successfully held the Eagles who tried to produce pressure in the final minutes, extending their winning streak to four games, and unbeaten streak to six games.

Mariner goalkeeper Marshall Spear (Rockport, Maine) came up huge with a aerial save on hard kicked ball by Phil Frost in the 86th minute, to preserve the shutout.

Spear ended the night with five saves, while Potter recorded seven stops.

This is the Mariners first shutout win over the Eagles since October 20th, 1992. With the win Maine Maritime improves to 6-4-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the NAC. The Mariners sit atop the NAC standings, tied with Thomas College (3-0-1) with 10 points overall.

The Mariners will return to action this Tuesday against the University of Maine at Farmington for another NAC tilt. Maine Maritime will host the Beavers for a 7:00 PM game on Ritchie Field.
