Bucs Stop Mariners

CASTINE, Maine -- Massachusetts Maritime used a 6-0 scoring run in the first half to spark a 13-5 win over Maine Maritime in the first game of the inaugural Maritime Cup in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Friday. The Buccaneers, who also won the Admirals Cup for the second straight season, remained perfect at 2-0, while the Mariners fell to 0-2.

Drew Prowse and Dylan Freudenberg paced Mass. Maritime with three goals each, Reed McLean and Sean Staples added a pair of scores and Ryan McNeil, Nicholas Foley and Anthony Kurylak each netted a shot. Freudenberg also recorded a game-best three assists and Paul Plainten picked up the win with four saves in goal.

Bronson Guimond and Justin Lovely both scored twice to lead the Mariners and Nick Snelling added a goal. Lovely also registered Maine Maritime's lone assist and James Wilgus stopped four shots between the pipes.

Lovely and Snelling scored in the opening four minutes of the game to put the Mariners ahead 2-0 with 11 minutes left in the first quarter. Kurylak found Prowse for the Bucs first score and Joe Starkey hooked up with Freudenberg to even the game at 2-2 with 7:42 left in the opening quarter. Mass. Maritime finished the quarter with three unanswered -- with unassisted scores from Staples, McLean and Freudenberg -- to take a 5-2 lead.

McLean made it 6-2 with a man-up score early in the second for the Bucs before Guimond answered with an EMO score two minutes later. Freudenberg, Prowse and Staples each found the back of the net to end the second quarter with Mass. Maritime ahead 9-2.

Prowse and Kurylak scored for the Bucs in the third quarter and Lovely netted his second shot of the game for the Mariners. Guimond opened the fourth quarter by depositing and Lovely pass before Foley and McNeil scored the final goals of the game for the Buccaneers.

Mass. Maritime returns to action Saturday, 1 p..m., against SUNY Maritime and the Mariners will take on the Privateers Sunday at noon.
