Box Score CASTINE, Maine -- Paul Grubb's goal two minutes into overtime lifted SUNY Maritime to a 10-9 win over Maine Maritime in the final game of the Maritime Cup Sunday at Ritchie Field in a non-conference men's lacrosse game. The Privateers improved to 2-5, while the Mariners dropped to 0-3.
Nicholas Betti and Brady Harrison led the Maine Maritime offense with three goals each and Bronson Guimond, Justin Lovely and Peter Moore each netted a shot. Nick Snelling recorded a game-high four assists for the Mariners and Gavin Cote stopped four shots in goal.
Grubb finished with three goals to lead the SUNY offense and Colin McCoy netted a pair. Corey Cristallo, Matt Hayes, Zachary Pace, Jordan Rose and Andrew Scalesi each netted a goal. Kieran Clark stopped 12 shots in goal.
Maine Maritime opened the game with an early 3-0 lead after consecutive scores from Harrison, Moore and Betti. Grubb's man-up goal with 51 seconds left in the first made it 3-1.
Harrison scored twice and Betti once, in the opening seven minutes of the second quarter, to put the Mariners ahead 6-1 with 6:48 left before halftime. The Privateers answered with three unanswered scores -- from Hayes, Grubb and Scalesi -- to make it 6-4 with 3:43 left. Betti's man-up goal at 2:04 made it 7-4 at halftime.
SUNY exploded for five unanswered scores in the third quarter to take a 9-7 lead. Pace found McCoy at 9:21, Dylan Larmony and Pace connected at 8:16 and Chris Stickney found Corey Cristallo to even the game the game at 7-7 with 7:11 left in the third. Rose gave SUNY an 8-7 lead and McCoy gave them a 9-7 lead with six seconds left in the quarter.
A.J. Larrabee found Lovely midway through the fourth to put the Mariners within one, 9-8, before Snelling hit Guimond for the equalizer with 3:51 left in the fourth.
The Privateers won 13 of 22 face-offs, while the Mariners fired more shots 46-32 and scooped more ground balls 41-40. Maine Maritime was 14 of 20 on clears and SUNY was 12 of 24. The Privateers scored on 3 of 6 man-up chances and Maine Maritime capitalized on 1 of 7 extra-man chances.
Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday, 12 p.m., hosting Johnson State in the North Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.
