Mariners Handle Thomas; Guimond Tallies 100th Point

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime cruised past Thomas College, 20-5, in the North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse quarterfinals Sunday. The Mariners (7-6) advanced to Wednesday's semifinals at New England College at a time to be determined. The Terriers concluded their season at 4-9.

Bronson Guimond reached 100 career points for Maine Maritime with three goals in the game.

Brady Harrison led all scorers with five goals for the Mariners, while Nicholas Betti netted four shots and A.J. Larrabee finished with two goals. Betti and Peter Moore finished with a game-high four assists each for MMA and Nick Snelling and Harrison recorded three and two helpers, respectively.

James Wilgus turned away seven shots for the Mariners and improved to 6-3 and Gavin Cote stopped five shots in relief.

Jordan Marino led Thomas with two goals and Carlos Cardona finished with 10 saves.

The Terriers struck first with a score from Gunnar Shelton to take an early 1-0 lead at 12:31. Maine Maritime responded with two goals from Betti before Marino evened the game again, 2-2, with 26 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Maine Maritime pumped in five unanswered goals in the second and third quarters to lead 12-2 heading into the final period.

The Mariners opened the fourth quarter with five unanswered to lead 17-2 with 6:17 left in the game. Harrison netted two goals in the run and Moore, Sam Bessey and Larrabee each added one. The Terriers halted the 15-goal onslaught when Bryan Ferris found the back of the net at 5:16 before Guimond and Harrison went back-to-back to keep the Mariners ahead 19-3. Marino scored at 2:39, Harrison followed with a goal at 1:30 and Oleg Deyle netted the final score of the game for Thomas at 1:18.

Maine Maritime won 18-of-29 face-offs, with Jack Tragert winning 15-of-25. The Mariners scooped 60 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers, with Ian Larcom and Tim Grant registering four caused turnovers each.
