Box Score CASTINE, Maine – On Wednesday afternoon the Mariners fell to the University of Maine at Fort Kent, 3-0 at Ritchie Field.
The Mariners were able to create offensive pressure in the first half, but the Bengals struck first in the 11th minute. Ben Kluvers placed a blooper over the Mariner goalie Marshall Spear to put Fort Kent up 1-0.
Fort Kent scored again in the 27th minute when Jamie Reid beat an outstretched Spear to the left side to extending the Bengal lead to 2-0.
In the second half the Mariners had a number of quality scoring chances, including a chance for Henry Hersey on a breakaway, but the opportunity was broken up by Bengal defenseman.
The Mariners had six corner kicks in the second half that led to traffic in front of the net. Ike Doiron headed a ball just wide of the net with a little under ten minutes remaining. The Bengals countered down the field and Wilfried Monthe found the bottom right corner sneaking the ball past Spear to add another goal for Fort Kent.
Fort Kent (4-0) recorded 24 shots, 15 on goal and the Mariners shot nine times, three on goal.
Bengal keepers Ahkeim Forbes and Jamie Cleland split the 90 minutes in net combining for three saves. Spear had 12 saves in the loss.
The Mariners fall to 1-4 on the season, and will return to action next Tuesday when they will host the University of Maine at Presque Isle at 4:00 PM.
