Mariners Grab First Win of Season; Defeat USM 1-0

BANGOR, Maine – Men's soccer picked up their first win of the 2014 season with a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the final day of the Husson University Eagles Challenge Cup.

The Mariners got off to a quick start, scoring the eventual game-winning goal in the 6th minute of play. Gabriel Warren grabbed his second goal of the season, teaming up with fellow team captain Christopher Gilman who recorded the assist.

Maine Maritime goalkeeper Marshall Spear was strong in net stopping both shots he faced to earn the win, while USM goalie Charlie Mull stopped 13 shots in the loss.

The Mariners shot 27 times, 14 landing on net, and had nine corner kick opportunities.

The Mariners (1-3) will return to action this Wednesday, September 10th against the University of Maine at Fort Kent hosted at Ritchie Field at 4:00 PM.   

Maine Maritime took third in the Husson Challenge Cup. 

Gordon's Bilbie was named the Husson Challenge Cup Most Valuable Player. Gordon's Andy Guthrie, Kristian Kasiguran and Caleb Cote were named to the All-Tournament Team. Also named All-Tournament were: Husson's Bean, Nic Pare and Michael Curtis; Maine Maritime's David Lord, Evan Turmenne and Gabriel Warren; and Southern Maine's Charles Mull and Tyler Rand.
