Mariners Fall Short Against Spartans

CASTLETON, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer fell to Castleton 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in their final game of the regular season.

The two teams battled back-and-forth before Glenn Devine broke the scoreless match with 33:31 remaining in the first half, to put the Spartans up 1-0.

Tom Samson (Waterville, Maine) tied things up for the Mariners with a goal in the 40th minute, beating Castleton keeper Amir Pasic, to grab his fourth goal of the season.

In the second half, the Mariners outshot the Spartans, 10-8 but the hosts added a goal in the 55th minute from Nihad Basic, to take the 2-1 lead and the eventual win.

Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) stopped six shots in net for the Mariners, while Pasic ended the afternoon with a pair of saves for Castleton.

The Mariners conclude their season with a 4-11-1 record overall and a 3-5-1 record in the North Atlantic Conference. The Spartans finish the regular season with a 13-5-1 record, including an 8-1 record in the conference.
