Mariners Late-Game Surge Falls Short Against SUNY

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to SUNY Maritime on Friday night, 15-8 in the Second Annual Maritime Cup.

The Mariners grabbed the first goal of the game when Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) set up Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) for his third goal of the season. The Privateers scored eight-unanswered goals to establish an 8-1 lead entering the half.

SUNY Maritime led by as much as 12-3 before the Mariners found their offensive rhythm, scoring five-unanswered goals, highlighted by three goals and an assist from Betti, to cut the Privateer lead to 12-8 with 9:45 remaining in the game.

The Privateers scored three-straight goals to halt the comeback efforts of the Mariners and take the 15-8 victory.

Betti led the Mariners offensively with four goals and an assist, while Guimond and Dean Samuelson (Ellsworth, Maine) ended the evening with two goals apiece, and A.J. Larrabee (Farmington, Maine) added two assists.

Nick Pellegrino led SUNY Maritime with four goals and three assists, Ian Danahy added three goals, while Mike Gangarossa contributed a pair of scores. Danahy and Jonathan Strezenec scooped up six ground balls each.

James Wilgus (Phippsburg, Maine) made 18 saves in net for the Mariners, while Brendan McNally recorded nine saves in goal for the Privateers.

The Mariners fall to 0-3 on the season while the Privateers improve to 2-2.

Maine Maritime returns to Reinhart Field tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to face Massachusetts Maritime in day two of the Second Annual Maritime Cup.
