Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer dropped a non-conference matchup with Bates College on Sunday afternoon, 7-0, on Ritchie Field.
Bates got on the board at 4:15, when Peabo Knoth's shot hit the left post and ricocheted into net behind Mariner keeper Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine).
The Mariners had one of their better chances of the game on a penalty kick opportunity in the 11th minute, but Ike Doiron's (Wilton, Maine) try was scooped up by Bates' Robbie Montanaro, preserving the Bobcat lead.
The Bobcats added another goal in the 20th minute when Nate Merchant's free kick found the net over the Mariner defenders. Merchant scored again in the 25th minute when he headed in a deflection from teammate Peder Bakken to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
Justin Yacovino added a goal in the 39th minute to send the Bobcats into the intermission with a 4-0 lead.
Mike Devite added a goal in the 61st minute, Merchant net his third of the game for the hat trick at 64:27, and Knoth grabbed his second goal of the game at 71:36 to give the Bobcats the 7-0 victory.
Abraham Vongkhamdy (Coventry, R.I.), Tristan Richards (Greenville, Maine) and Doiron tallied the shots on goal for the Mariners.
Coleman and Marshall Spear (Rockport, Maine) split time in net, with Coleman collecting nine saves and Spear stopping eight shots. Montanaro tallied two saves in net for the Bobcats in nearly 69 minutes of play, and Owen Lindenfelder recorded one save in relief.
The Mariners fall to 4-8-1 on the season and Bates improves to 5-6-2 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on this Tuesday when they host Maine-Farmington at 7:30 pm in North Atlantic Conference action.
