Box Score KEENE, N.H -- Maine Maritime Academy volleyball concluded regular season play splitting a non-conference doubleheader with a 3-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State and 3-2 loss to Keene State on Saturday afternoon.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – Eastern Connecticut State 1 (25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16)
A kill from Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) tied the first set at 13-13. The Mariners scored the next seven points to take a 20-13 lead highlighted by two aces from Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.). Eastern Connecticut scored four-straight to close the gap to 20-17 but the Mariners kept the lead and took the set 25-21.
A six-point run by the Mariners, capped off by an pair of ace from Clark gave Maine Maritime a 20-16 lead in the second set, but Eastern Connecticut put together a six-point run to take a narrow 23-22 lead. A kill from Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.), an error from the Vikings and a kill by Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) lifted the Mariners to a 25-23 victory in the second set.
The Vikings closed the Mariners' lead to one set with a narrow 25-23 victory in the third set, but the Mariners responded with an impressive 25-16 win in the fourth set, capped off by three-straight service aces from Adams.
O'Neal tallied her 14th double-double of the season with a match-high 18 kills, and 13 digs. Clark finished just shy of a double-double with 12 kills, nine digs, four aces and three blocks. Adams tallied a career-high 44 assists, and tied her career-high of eight aces, while also adding five digs and two kills. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied a match-high 21 digs.
Adrianna Mihalek led the Vikings with 14 kills and nine digs, while teammate Carly Balskus added 11 kills, Michelle Valliere led Eastern Connecticut with 16 digs and Nina Zimmitti chipped in with 10 digs. Leah Sopneski led the team with 18 assists.
Keene State 3 – Maine Maritime Academy 2 (17-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-27, 15-8)
The Mariners built an early 11-2 lead following a nine-point run in the first set, highlighted by two aces and a kill from Tess Clark. The Owls closed the gap to 20-17 but the Mariners scored five-straight to claim the first set.
The Owls fought back, winning the next two sets by identical scores of 25-14. In the fourth set, the two teams battled back-and-forth with the Mariners taking a narrow 18-16 lead following a seven-point run. With the set tied at 25-25 Gillian O'Neal tallied a kill and an ace to lift the Mariner to the 27-25 win, tying the match at 2-2.
With the fifth set tied at 6-6 the Owls outscored the Mariners 9-2 to take the victory.
O'Neal recorded another double-double with 21 kills and 11 digs while also tallying two assists and two aces. Sydney Adams had 34 assists, nine digs, three aces and a block, while Clark added nine kills and 12 digs and Maria Perez chipped in with a team-high 16 digs.
Rachel Lamica tallied a double-double to lead the Owls, with 18 kills and 11 digs. Brooke Hatanaka added 12 kills, Riley Bunker tallied a match-high 26 digs and Katie Cunningham led the match with 36 assists.
The Mariners conclude their regular season going 21-8 and will return to action on Friday, November 4 when they host Lyndon State in a NAC Semifinal match at 6:00 pm.
