Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Norwich University, 17-8 on Friday evening, in non-conference action on Ritchie Field.
After the Cadets built an early 5-2 lead led by back-to-back goals from Connor Loughran, a man-up goal from Dean Samuelson (Ellsworth, Maine) in the final minute of the first quarter sparked a three-goal run for the Mariners, tying things up at 5-5 with 8:02 to play in the second.
Matt Flaherty and Ian Kennedy scored to give Norwich a 7-5 lead, and Samuelson scored his third goal of the game at 3:14 to send the Mariners into halftime down 7-6.
The Cadets outscored the Mariners 10-2 in the final two quarters to take the 17-8 victory.
Samuelson led the Mariners with four goals, while Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) added a pair of goals and Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) and Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) each added a goal for the Mariners. Brendan Broderick (Massena, N.Y.) added a game-high four assists and Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) led the Mariners with eight ground balls, while recording 10 saves in net.
Flaherty and Loughran each added hat tricks for the Cadets, while Josh Jenkins and Ryan McCarthy scored twice for the visitors and seven players grabbed one goal apiece in the victory. Jack Dwyer tallied a game-high nine ground balls, while going 21-for-31 on the faceoff. Ian Kriger tallied eight saves in net for Norwich.
The Mariners fall to 0-5 on the season, while Norwich improves to 1-5 on the year. Maine Maritime opens up North Atlantic Conference tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against Green Mountain College.
