Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon against Green Mountain College, 16-7, in North Atlantic Conference action on Ritchie Field.
Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.) found Brendan Broderick (Massena, N.Y.) in front of the net to put the Mariners up 1-0, 20 seconds into the game. Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) and Michael Dedian (Scarborough, Maine) added unassisted markers to give Maine Maritime a 3-0 lead. The Eagles jumped on the board on a man-up goal from Nick Parsons, but Broderick found Samuelson with 13 seconds to go in the first quarter to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead.
The Mariners outscored the Eagles 5-2 in the second quarter, led by two goals from each Broderick and Samuelson, to take a 9-3 lead into the intermission.
Maine Maritime held the Eagles scoreless in the third quarter, while building a 10-point lead (13-3), entering the final 15 minutes.
Green Mountain fought back scoring back-to-back goals to open up the fourth quarter, and outscored the Mariners 4-3, but the Mariners hung on for the conference victory.
Broderick led the Mariners with a career-high four goals, two ground balls, an assist and a caused turnover, while Samuelson tallied a hat trick, and dished out a game-high four assists, scooped up three ground balls and caused a turnover, Grant-Roy also recorded a hat trick and an assist, while scooping up five ground balls. Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) scored a pair of goals and scooped up three ground balls.
Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) added a goal and a game-high 10 ground balls, going 11-for-12 from the faceoff, and causing a turnover. CJ Kruse (Skowhegan, Maine) was also impressive on the faceoff, going eight-of-nine. Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) and Zachary Doucette (Portland, Maine) each added their first-career goal for the Mariners, and Whittemore scooped up eight ground balls. Dedian tallied a goal, a ground ball and a caused turnover, and Justin Kretzmer (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the Mariners with a pair of caused turnovers, scooping up three ground balls.
Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) was strong in net for the Mariners, picking up his first collegiate lacrosse win, stopping seven shots, and scooping up three ground balls.
Will Durant, David Gerken and Brendan Scully led the Eagles with two goals each, while Parsons tallied the other score for the visitors, and two caused turnovers.
Arun Falk stopped 16 shots in net while also scooping up four ground balls and causing a turnover.
The Mariners improve to 1-5 on the season and 1-0 in the NAC, while the Eagles fall to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to take on NAC opponent Thomas College, at 4:00 p.m. in Waterville, Maine.
