Lyndon Holds Off Mariners

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Lyndon State College on Sunday, 16-12 in North Atlantic Conference action.

The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie after the first quarter, as Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.), Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.) and Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) recorded goals for the Mariners. The Mariners outscored the Hornets 5-4 in the second quarter, led by four goals from Samuelson, to take a narrow 8-7 lead into the halftime.

Maine Maritime opened up the scoring in the third quarter when Grafton Page (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) tallied his first career goal on an assist from Whittemore, but the two teams battled back and forth. The Mariners held the one-goal advantage entering the fourth quarter, but the Hornets held the visitors scoreless in the final quarter, on their way to the 16-12 victory.

Whittemore finished the afternoon with a career-high seven points, tallying five goals and dishing out two assists. Samuelson scored five goals and recorded an assist, while scooping up four ground balls and causing three turnovers. Tim Grant led the Mariners with eight ground balls, going 12-of-22 on the faceoff, and causing three turnovers. Michael Dedian (Scarborough, Maine) recorded a team-high five caused turnovers and Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) stopped eight shots in net in the loss for the Mariners.

Spencer Aubin led the Hornets with five goals and an assist, while teammates Shea Jones and Kevin McCarthy each tallied hat tricks, and Zachary Carey and Justin Mosher grabbed two goals apiece. Mosher also dished out a game-high four assists. Colin Young led all players with 12 ground balls, going 17-of-31 on the faceoff, Marshall Blackman caused a game-high six turnovers, and Shane Morin tallied seven saves in net in the victory.

The Mariners fall to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Hornets improve to 3-7 on the season and 3-3 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday when they host Maine-Farmington at 7:00 p.m. on Ritchie Field.
