Box Score LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Lyndon State College on Saturday afternoon 14-8, in a North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal matchup.
Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) opened up the scoring, with an unassisted goal for the Mariners at 11:07, but the Hornets answered back with three-straight scores to take a 3-1 lead. Whittemore tallied another goal with just six seconds remaining, this time on an assist from Dean Samuelson (Southbury, Conn.), to cut the deficit to 3-2 after one quarter.
The Hornets outscored the Mariners 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Lyndon scored two-straight to open up the third quarter, but Samuelson added his first goal of the game on an assist from Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine), spurring a 3-1 run for the Mariners to cut the Hornet lead to 9-6.
Lyndon put together a three-goal run to open up the final quarter, and despite back-to-back goals from Samuelson and Whittemore, the Hornets held on the claim their first-ever playoff win, 14-8.
Whittemore led the Mariners with four goals, while Samuelson tallied a pair of goals and Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) chipped in with a goal. Grant-Roy tallied a goal, two assists and a game-high eight ground balls while Michael Dedian (Scarborough, Maine) tallied an assist, caused a turnover and scooped up three ground balls. Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) recorded 10 saves in the loss, in net.
Kevin McCarthy and Spencer Aubin led the Hornet offense, each with four goals and one assist. Shea Jones added two goals and three assists while Zachary Carey chipped in three goals. Colin Young helped Lyndon take the faceoff battle going 13-for-24 with eight groundballs. Shane Morin registered the win in goal with 12 saves.
The Mariners conclude their season with a 5-10 overall record, while the Hornets improve to 7-7 overall and will travel to New England College on Wednesday for a NAC Semifinal matchup.
