Box Score WENHAM, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Gordon College, 22-5 in the season opener for both teams, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots went on a three-goal run to open up the game, but Maine Maritime's Chase Whittemore (Skowhegan, Maine) cut the deficit to two in the final minute of the first quarter with his first goal of the season, on an assist from Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine).
The two teams exchanged goals to begin the second quarter, Gordon's Hunter Ward picked up a man-up goal at 14:16 and Maine Maritime's Kyle Thomas (Yarmouth, Maine) tallied an unassisted strike at 11:13. The Fighting Scots went on another three-goal run to take 7-2 lead with 4:34 to go.
Whittemore and Grant-Roy scored back-to-back unassisted goals for the Mariners to cut the lead to 7-4, but Gordon's Nico Manganiello added his fifth goal of the game as time expired, giving the Fighting Scots an 8-4 lead at halftime.
Gordon outscored the Mariners 14-1 in the final two quarters to pick up the non-conference victory. Grant-Roy picked up another assist on the Mariners' lone goal in the second half, this time on a goal by Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine).
Daniel Lee (Satellite Beach, Fla.) stopped 17 shots in his collegiate debut for the Mariners, while Jay Gallipo earned the win in net for Gordon, recording three saves in 55 minutes of play.
Nick Palandjian finished with a team-high eight points with four goals and four assists to lead Gordon. Manganiello added five goals and two assists, Dan Arthur chipped in with four goals, while Nate Distasio added a hat-trick.
Grant-Roy led the Mariners offensively with two assists and a goal, and George Doe (Kennebunkport, Maine) led Maine Maritime going 5-of-18 from the face-off circle.
The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Fighting Scots improve to 1-0. The Mariners will host the University of Maine on Saturday, February 25 for an exhibition game at 1:00 pm before resuming play against at the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, March 4 at 12:00 pm.
