Men's Lacrosse Falls to Southern Maine

PORTLAND, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to the University of Southern Maine 17-6, on Monday afternoon in non-conference action on Fitzpatrick Field.

The Huskies went on a three-goal run to open up the first quarter, led by goals from Sam Hornblower, Seth Wing and Jeff Urmston. The Mariners battled back, when Justin Kretzmer (Glastonbury, Conn.) found Andrew Waltz (Topsham, Maine) for his first-career goal at 7:06 and Zachary Doucette (Portland, Maine) added an unassisted strike just 61 seconds later, to close the deficit to 3-2. USM added three more goals to close out the first quarter with a 6-2 lead.

Southern Maine held the Mariners to just two goals in the second quarter, taking an 11-4 lead into halftime, and just one goal in each of the final two quarters to claim the 17-6 victory.

Doucette led the Mariners offensively with his first-career hat trick, Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) tallied two goals and an assist, and Waltz added a goal. Kretzmer and Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) added assists for Maine Maritime.

Urmston led the Huskies with four goals, while teammates Wing, Keegan Smith, Bryce Randall, Paul Leonardo and John Bossi each tallied a pair of goals. Max Hornblower led all players with a game-high five ground balls, while S. Hornblower recorded a game-high three caused turnovers.

Daniel Lee (Satellite Beach, Fla.) tallied four saves in the loss for the Mariners, while teammate John Stolz (Scarborough, Maine) tallied six stops in 45 minutes in net. Southern Maine's Zach Bessette earned the victory with 13 saves, while teammate Alex Leblanc stopped five shots in the final quarter.

The Huskies held a 41-35 advantage in total shots and won the battle of the ground balls 33-25.

The Mariners fall to 0-2, while the Huskies improve to 1-1. Maine Maritime returns to Ritchie Field on Friday, March 10 to host SUNY Maritime in the first day of the Fourth Annual Maritime Classic at 8:00 pm.
