Mariners Earn Big Conference Victory Over Badgers

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer picked up an important 2-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon on Ritchie Field.

The Mariners scored back-to-back goals early in the first half to edge the Badgers. Ike Doiron (Wilton, Maine) picked up his fourth goal of the season when Matthew Caron (Scarborough, Maine) connected with him on a long throw in in the 13th minute. Caron picked up his own goal in the 14th minute, when teammate Liam Welch (Temple, Maine) passed a ball across the box.

Johnson State broke the shutout in the 72nd minute on a goal from Alexander Vetere. The Mariners, dominated ball possession and out shot the Badgers 26-12, held on for the victory. 

Maine Maritime's Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.) stopped four shots in the victory, while Johnson's Gerrit Lane stopped nine shots in the loss.

The Mariners improve to 2-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference, while the Badgers fall to 6-5 on the season and 1-2 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow at 12:00 pm when they host Lyndon State College for another conference matchup.
