Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine 15-4 on Monday night in non-conference action at Ritchie Field.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Monks improve to 4-4. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 31 at Castleton University for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup at 1:00 pm.
The Monks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter, led by a pair of goals from Michael Finn, but the Mariners cut the deficit to three on a goal from Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine), the first of his career, early in the second quarter. Saint Joseph's responded just 13 seconds later, to retake the four-goal lead and added a man-up goal later in the quarter to take a 6-1 lead into halftime.
Saint Joseph's held the Mariners scoreless in the third quarter, while building an 11-1 advantage but Orion Sargent (Topsham, Maine) picked up his first goal of the game just 70 seconds into the fourth quarter to bring it to 11-2. The Monks responded with two man-up goals and took a 13-2 lead into the final 10 minutes of play. Sargent added his second goal of the game at 9:45 and Bailey Stockford (Mt. Vernon, Maine) chipped in with his first career goal with 1:59 to play, but the Monks held on for the 15-4 victory.
Sargent led the Mariners with two goals, while both Stockford and Tocci added a goal and an assist and Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) and Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) each picked up assists. Mitchell Farley (Biddeford, Maine) scooped up 10 ground balls, going 12-of-23 on the face off and William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) led the Mariners with three caused turnovers.
Finn led the Monks with four goals and an assist, while Shane Puleo chipped in with a hat-trick and Matt Donnell added two goals and an assist. Shane Fores led Saint Joseph's with six ground balls, going 11-of-21 from the face off.
In net, Maine Maritime's Isaiah Weston (Mt. Vernon, Maine) stopped seven shots in the loss, while Matthew Emery (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) collected three saves. Connor Trainor stopped five shots in the victory for the Monks.
