Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to Castleton University 6-2 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Spartan Stadium.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the NAC, while the Spartans improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they travel to take on in-state NAC rival Husson University at 4:00 pm.
Castleton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but Sawyer Watson (Topsham, Maine) cut the Spartans' lead to two goals with his third goal of the season in the final minute of the quarter.
Neither team scored in the second quarter and the Spartans carried the 3-1 advantage into halftime.
Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) picked up his second goal of the season, early in the third quarter to bring the Mariners within one, but the Spartans answered back with a goal from Kyle Lutinski at 9:40, to retake the two-goal advantage and added two goals in the fourth quarter to pick up the 6-2 victory.
Tocci led the Mariners with a goal and an assist, Watson added a goal, and William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) led the team with six ground balls. Both Evon and Nathan Granholm (Brunswick, Maine) tallied three caused turnovers.
Sam Siegel led the Spartans with two goals, two assists, Jason Sedell also added two goals, and Lutinski added a goal and an assist. Josh Gosselin scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, while Andrew McCarthy led the Spartans with two caused turnovers.
Maine Maritime's Isaiah Weston (Mt. Vernon, Maine) was impressive in net stopping 13 shots in the loss, while Castleton's Brandon Myron collected seven saves in the victory.
The Spartans held a 34-23 edge in ground balls and the Mariners went 28-of-32 on clear opportunities while the Spartans went 21-for-26.
