Mariners Overpower Badgers

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse cruised to a 24-6 victory over NVU-Johnson on Saturday morning in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Norwich University's Sabine Field.

How it Happened: Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) and Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) scored goals in the opening minute to put the Mariners up 2-0. Johnson's Dave Legris cut the gap to 2-1 but the Mariners scored eight goals to take a 10-2 lead into the second quarter. Maine Maritime continued to dominate in the second quarter and took a 14-3 lead into halftime. 

The Badgers scored three-unanswered goals to open up the third quarter but the Mariners scored 10-unanswered goals to secure the 24-6 win.

Inside the Numbers: Wilson led all players with a career-high seven goals and added two assists and three ground balls. Tocci added a career-high six goals and six assists, while contributing four ground balls and a caused turnover.

Sawyer Watson (Topsham, Maine) tallied four goals, an assist and four ground balls, Alex Snowman (Sarasota, Fla.) added three goals and six ground balls, while tying the Maine Maritime single-game record with 21 faceoff wins, and Bailey Stockford (Mt. Vernon, Maine) added a pair of goals, a ground ball and a caused turnover.

Defensively William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) led the Mariners with 12 ground balls and a caused turnover. Matthew Emery (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) earned in the victory in net for the Mariners with his performance in the first half, stopping four shots, while Verne Rice (Stratham, N.H.) added three saves in the second half. 

Josh Benak led the Badgers with two goals, Ryan Palmisano tallied a team-best five ground balls and Marcus Holmes recorded a game-high four caused turnovers. 

Patrick Bell collected one save in net for the Badgers, while Jacob Switzer accumulated nine saves in nearly 47 minutes of play.

The Mariners dominated ground balls 52-13, faceoffs 22-34.

Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the NAC, while the Badgers fall to 0-6 on the season and 0-4 in the conference. The Mariners return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Colby for a 7:00 pm non-conference matchup.
