Mariners Shut Down Eagles in OT Thriller

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fought back from a four-goal deficit and held Husson University scoreless in the fourth quarter to capture a 10-9 victory in overtime on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.

With the win the Mariners conclude their season at 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the NAC, while the Eagles wrap up their season with a 4-7 overall record and a 3-3 record in conference play.

How it Happened: The Eagles scored a pair of goals to open up the game, but Alex Snowman (Sarasota, Fla.) tallied a score for the Mariners at 2:08. Husson built a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter, but Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) and Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) scored back-to-back goals for the Mariners to tie the game at 3-3 with 9:37 to go in the first half. Husson went on a three-goal run to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Max Barton (Yarmouth, Maine) tallied a goal early in the third quarter, but the Eagles jumped out to their biggest lead, 8-4, with goals from Blake Campbell and Zach Glazier. The Mariners used three-straight goals to close the gap to 8-7 but a goal in the final seconds of the third from Husson's Gunner McAllister sent the visitors into the final quarter with a 9-7 advantage.

Wilson and Tocci net goals to tie the game at 9-9 and the Mariners held the Eagles scoreless in the final 15 minutes, forcing overtime.

Sawyer Watson (Topsham, Maine) scored his 12th goal of the season with 1:22 remaining in overtime to send the Mariners to victory. 

Inside the Numbers: Tocci led the Mariners with three goals and an assist, Wilson ended the evening with two goals, three assists, and two ground balls, and Watson tallied two goals, two assists and three ground balls.

Snowman net two goals and scooped up two ground balls, while Oscar Kwok (York, Maine) led the Mariners with three caused turnovers and William Evon (Barrington, Ill.) scooped up a team-best eight ground balls.

Verne Rice (Stratham, N.H.) tallied his first collegiate win in net for the Mariners with 13 saves and four ground balls.

Glazier led the Eagles with three goals, Chad Merrill scooped up a team-high eight ground balls, and Husson's goalie Matt Martin collected 14 saves in the loss.

Both teams scooped up 38 ground balls, but the Eagles held a slight advantage on the faceoff, winning 11 while the Mariners won 10 faceoffs.
