Mariners and UNE Battle to Draw

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with the University of New England on Friday night, in the season opener for both teams at Ritchie Field.

Both teams begin the 2019 season at 0-0-1.

Lee Esposito put the Nor'easters on the board in the 13th minute on a pass from teammate Cody Kennedy.

Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) tied the game in the 71st minute with a laser to the bottom right of the net, after a well-played ball from teammate Pieter Oudejans (Rockledge, Fla.).

The two teams battled closely for the remainder of regulation, but neither team found the back of the net in the two overtime periods.

Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine) recorded a pair of saves in the first half, while Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) stopped a total of five shots in the second half and two overtime periods. UNE's Camden Spear stopped the one shot he faced in net in the first half and tallied another save in the overtime periods, and teammate Will Shearon collected two saves in the second half.

UNE outshot the Mariners 16-14, and took nine corner kicks compared to the Mariners' eight.

The Mariners return to action next Friday, September 6 when they host Massachusetts Maritime at 7:30 pm in the first day of the Maritime Cup.
