Bengals Outlast Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to UMaine-Fort Kent, 83-71 on Monday afternoon in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The Bengals jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the first half, but the Mariners closed the gap to one (15-14) at 10:42 following a three from Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine). Fort Kent led by eight with 1:44 to play, but the Mariners cut the deficit in half with another DePatsy three at 1:00. Bryce Gilbert made a layup with 21 seconds to go and sent Fort Kent into halftime with a 43-37 advantage.

Andrew Liebert (Plano, Texas) made a pair from the line and Riley MacLeod (Bucksport, Maine) hit a jumper to bring the Mariners within two (43-41) but the Bengals answered with six-consecutive points to take a 48-41 lead at 16:43. The Mariners orchestrated a 9-2 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 13:37 to go, but the Bengals outscored the Mariners 33-21 to finish up the game and claim the victory.

Inside the Numbers: Kimani Anderson (Houston, Texas) and Liebert led the Mariners with 18 points each, Anderson contributed eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block while Liebert finished the afternoon with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. DePatsy recorded 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal and Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.

Gilbert led the Bengals with 28 points, four rebounds and two assists, Zeke McMurty tallied a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals and an assist, while Mekhi Foreman contributed 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The Mariners shot 38.2 percent from the floor and 39.1 percent from three-point and while the Bengals shot 50.0 percent overall and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Bengals held a 43-32 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 3-12 overall, while the Bengals improve to 7-15 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday when they travel to UMaine-Presque Isle for a 4:00 pm North Atlantic Conference matchup.
