Strong Start Lifts Beacons Over Mariners

BOSTON, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to UMass Boston 22-3 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at James Cotter Field.

How it Happened: The Beacons came out strong to start the game, scoring 13-unanswered goals to take a 13-0 lead into halftime.

The Mariners controlled the third quarter and added goals from Evan Golembeske (New Milford, Conn.) and Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) to cut the deficit to 13-2, but UMass Boston went on a nine-goal run in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.

Inside the Numbers: Jacob Belanger (Brunswick, Maine) led the Mariners with a goal and an assist, Golembeske and Tocci tallied a goal each, while Caden White (Woodstock, Vt.) and Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) each chipped in with an assist.

Nathan Granholm (Brunswick, Maine) led the Mariners defensively with four caused turnovers, while Garrett Ruszkowski (Saugus, Mass.) and William Davee (Hope, Maine) scooped up a three ground balls each.

Gavin Admirand led the Beacons with six goals, four assists, four ground balls and a caused turnover, Darragh Fahey added five goals and an assist and Mic Flynn chipped in with four goals. 

Patrick Colburn led UMass Boston with three caused turnovers and Jack Dobrzynski scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls, going 21-of-23 from the face off.

Ruszkowski collected a career-high 19 saves in net for the Mariners, while UMass Boston's Trevor Koppy collected three saves in the first half to secure the win and Charlie Cook recorded nine saves in the second half.

The Beacons held a 79-20 advantage in shots, a 44-23 advantage in ground balls and went 24-of-27 from the face off.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 3-1 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 4-0 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday, March 14 when they open up North Atlantic Conference action against SUNY Delhi at 12:00 pm at Ritchie Field.
