CASTINE, Maine – Lacrosse's Nathan Granholm (Brunswick, Maine) has been named the 2019-2020 Maine Maritime Academy Male Leader of the Year.
Granholm, a senior Marine Engineering Technology major and three-year team captain, is earning the honor for the second-consecutive season.
"Nate will go down as one of the most influential members in men's lacrosse program history for his work on and off the field," said Maine Maritime Academy Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Brandon Melville.
"Nate was the first member of the team to reach out upon my transition; who has immediately bought into my vision for the growth and culture of the program in the short and long-term," said Melville. "Nate is one of the most attentive, reliable and hardworking athletes I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. He's a man of great integrity and honor, who will carry what he has learned here at MMA to the workforce and life."
"He is someone who is respected amongst all his teammates, coaches, staff and opponents, because of his devotion and commitment to doing everything the Mariner way," added Melville. "Through the ups and downs of the program and an unorthodox athletic career, he stayed true to who he was and what he had learned. He continued to use the tools and resources he gained from his time in inCommand as a three-year captain."
The Mariners Leadership Award, first awarded in 2017-2018, is intended to honor the male and female athlete that most embraced the principles of leadership espoused by inCommand, the Mariners Athletics leadership program.
Granholm, a two-time North Atlantic Conference (NAC) First Team selection, started in all four games for the Mariners this season. The defender scooped up 10 ground balls and caused eight turnovers.
