Maine Maritime sailing placed eighth and 11th at the Chris Loder Trophy hosted by the University of New Hampshire this past weekend.
Mariners sailors Ella Beauregard (Southport Island, Maine), Haley Kent (Needham, Mass.), Quinn Collins (Stowe, Vt.), Courtney King (Appleton, Maine), Lochlann Ludwig (Patuxent River, Md.), Nicho Paulu (Yarmouth, Maine), Kyle Carse (Clinton, Conn.), and Nathan Hyde (Saco, Maine) traveled to The University of New Hampshire to compete in the Chris Loder Trophy in FJs. On Saturday, October 23rd, the wind at Mendums Pond was less than three knots, and racing was postponed until noon to allow for the breeze to fill in. Beauregard and Kent were able to secure a fourth place in the first race of the day by staying in the pressure and sailing in-phase on the upwind legs. The race committee was able to get three races off in both fleets for the day. After day one of racing, the Mariners were in seventh out of 18 teams.
On Sunday, October 24th the breeze was a much stronger 10-15 knots out of the NNW, settling to an 8-10 knot westerly in the afternoon. The continued shifty and puffy conditions on the small pond with the stronger breezes resulted in multiple capsizes and auto-tacks in the fleet. The race committee was able to run another five races in each fleet before the 3pm cutoff time. Collins and King secured a fourth, fifth, and sixth place in B fleet on day two. The Mariners finished in eighth place overall out of the 18 teams, beating out Massachusetts Maritime Academy, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Middlebury College, and others. The University of Vermont, Salve Regina University, and Northeastern University took first, second and third place for the regatta.
The Mariners return to action on this weekend when they travel to compete in the NE Fall Dinghy Championships hosted by MIT.
