Mariners Shutout Huskies

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's soccer beat University of Southern Maine (USM) 2-0 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night.

How it Happened: After a scoreless first half, Ryan Smith (Coronado, Calif.) scored his first career goal off a cross by Elijah Yeaton (Farmington, Maine) in the 72th minute to give the Mariners a 1-0 led. Branden Pasternak (Orlando, Fla.) added another goal off an assist from Brad McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) in the 90th minute to earn the Mariners a 2-0 victory.

Inside the Numbers: The Huskies held a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks over the Mariners. Matthew Castella (San Antonio, Texas) and Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine) spilt the time in net for Maine Maritime in the shutout. Castella had one save and Tomlin had two saves on the night, while Jacob Satires had three saves for the Huskies.

Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 4-5-1 overall, while USM falls to 4-6-1 on the year. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, October 9 when they host SUNY Delhi at 2:30 pm in a conference matchup.
