Penobscot Bay Open & Harman Cup

Mariners Sailing opened up their fall season at home this weekend in Castine, Maine at the Penobscot Bay Trophy and the Harman Cup.

Sailors Luke Healy (Lakewood, Ohio), Tristan Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.), Ella Beauregard (Southport Island, Maine), Haley Kent (Needham, Mass.), Nalu Ho (Lahaina, Hawaii), Keegan Brooks (Raymond, Maine), Olivia Mitchell (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), and Robert Jacobs (Denton, Md.) competed for the Mariners in the Penobscot Bay Trophy, sailing in 420s. Saturday, September 11 brought challenging wind conditions, with a light NNW breeze, ranging from 5-8kts, and a fair Ebb tide. Out of the 10 races run, Healy and Walker posted high finishes of fourth and fifth of 16 on day one. Sunday, September 12 brought a much more stable SSW breeze, ranging from 12-16kts. The Mariners found more success getting off the line with good speed on day two in the final six races. Beauregard and Kent were the top finishers for the Mariners with two fifth place finishes out of 16. The Mariners finished sixth and seventh overall.

Zachary York (Sewell, N.J.), Arden Astin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Benjamin Mazzucco (East Haven, Conn.), and Kenneth Deloe (Rochester, N.Y.) competed for the Mariners in the Harman Cup, sailed in Colgate 26s. The Harman Cup is a ladder event, with qualifying teams earning a berth at the New England Match Race Championship, hosted by USCGA. Saturday, September 11 had a light West wind, which York, Astin, Mazzucco, Deloe were very consistent and managed high finishes of third and finished fourth overall. Though the Mariners struggled with boat handling on day one, their spinnaker handling was a highlight. Day two had much different conditions with 18-22kt southerly winds, bringing four to eight-foot waves. The winners of the day were able to successfully drive their boats through the swell and chop. Maine Maritime posted high finishes of third place on day two in the final five of the 11 regatta races on Sunday, September 12. The Mariners finished fourth overall to qualify for the next event in the series.

Mariners Sailing continues the Fall Season next weekend, at the Nicholas Barnett Trophy hosted by Bowdoin College and the Men's Singles Qualifiers hosted by Boston College.
