Box Score 2 Nashua, N.H. – Maine Maritime volleyball went 2-0 on the day, defeating both Westfield State College (29-27, 25-14, 25-12) and Rivier University (23-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23, 15-4) on Saturday in non-conference action.
Maine Maritime 3 – Westfield State College 0 (29-27, 25-14, 25-12)
How it Happened: In a competitive first set, the Mariners used a five-point run towards the end to lift over the Owls, with a score of 29-27. The Mariners took both of the second and third sets in commanding fashion, winning 25-14 and 25-12 respectively.
Inside the Numbers: Katie Albritton (Hutto, Texas) helped lead Maine Maritime with a game-high 27 assists, along with seven aces, five digs, and two kills while Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) added a game-high 13 kills, four digs, and an assist. Hunnie Zuber (Lubbock, Texas) chipped in a game-high eight aces, five digs, and four kills.
Bridgette McAndrews led the Owls with seven kills, eight digs, and three aces and Julia Dangel-Garcia tallied a team-high 10 assists and two digs.
Maine Maritime 3 – Rivier University 2 (23-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-4)
How it Happened: The Mariners rallied back from a 0-2 deficit to beat Rivier University 3-2. In an extremely competitive first four sets, the Mariners and the Raiders split, winning two each. In the fifth set, the Mariners jumped to a 6-0 led, lead by Lily Pierannunzi (Keene, N.H.) who tallied four consecutive aces. The Mariners won the set 15-4 and secured the match victory.
Inside the Numbers: Albritton led the Mariners again with a game-high 42 assists, seven digs, and five kills. Melampy chipped in a game-high 20 kills, nine digs, and an ace and Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.) tallied a game-high 21 digs and an ace.
Avery Pollard helped lead the Raiders with a team-high 36 assists, eight digs, and four kills. Lily Sills added with 12 kills, four aces, and three digs. Sofia Pawlusik and Olivia Garand both tallied 11 digs.
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 5-3 on the season while Rivier University falls to 2-3 overall. The Mariners return to action on Wednesday, September 22 when they travel to Bates College for a non-conference matchup.
