Maine Maritime Sailing finished 16th and 17th at the Nicholas Barnett Trophy and 15th, 18th, and 19th at the Men's Singles Qualifier.
Nalu Ho (Lahaina, Hawaii), Zachary York (Sewell, N.J.), and Kenneth Deloe (Rochester, N.Y.) competed for the Mariners at the New England Singlehand Championship. Saturday, September 18 brought light and variable wind, and led to many hours of postponement. The wind that filled in ranged from 3-5kt and favored lighter sailors, with very aggressive boat handling. York posted a high finish of 15th of 24 on the day. Sunday, September 19 started with a 5-15kt North Easterly breeze, gradually swinging right, and backing to 5-8kt by the end of the day. The Mariners used the higher wind and bigger waves to their advantage. The bigger breeze favored Ho who placed a high finish of 13th of 24 for the Mariners.
Olivia Mitchell (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Robert Jacobs (Denton, Md.), Luke Healy (Lakewood, Ohio), Tristan Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.), Quinn Collins (Stowe, Vt.), Nathan Graves (Edgecomb, Maine), Sean Caulfield (San Diego, Calif.), Benjamin Mazzucco (East Haven, Conn.), and Jacob Peabody (Mount Desert Island, Maine) competed for the Mariners in the Nicholas Barnett Trophy sailing in 420s and FJs. On Saturday, September 19 there were overcast skies and no breeze. The sailors pushed off the docks in a fading westerly. A Southwest breeze filled in ranging from 4-8kt and four races were completed in each division before a thick bank of fog rolled in and racing was suspended. The A division competed in FJs and the B division raced in 420s. Of the four races that day, Healy and Walker posted high finishes of ninth out of 17 racers on the first race of the day. Sunday, September 19 had more favorable conditions for sailing, with the breeze starting North and gradually moving to North West at 10-15 knots. Ten races were completed in each division. On the first race, Collins and Graves finished in 4th place out of 17 boats. Mariners finished 16th and 17th overall.
The Mariners return to action next weekend at the Hoyt Trophy hosted by Brown University and the Hood Trophy hosted by Tufts University.
