Mariners and Roos Battle to Draw

CANTON, N.Y. – Maine Maritime men's soccer tied to SUNY Canton, 1-1 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened: After a scoreless first 18 minutes, Xander Fortuna-Ramos (West Covina, Calif.) put the Mariners ahead 1-0 on a ball played over the top of the defense from Landon Nichols (Searsmont, Maine), which held through the remainder of the first half.

Ellis Sanchez scored for the Roos off a penalty shot in the 63rd minute to make the score 1-1. The two teams battled closely for the remainder of regulation, but neither team found the back of the net in the two overtime periods.

Inside the Numbers: The Mariners and Kangaroos both tallied nine shots on the game, while the Roos held a 10-8 advantage in corner kicks. Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) started out in net for the Mariners totaling two saves, while Matthew Castella (San Antonio, Texas) finished in net with four saves on the afternoon. Owen Kwong recorded five saves for SUNY Canton.

Up Next: The Mariners move to 2-4-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference while the Roos fall to 2-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, September 26 when the travel to Vermont to play NVU-Johnson at 2:30 pm.
