Smith Hits .750 in Conference Victory Over Owls

PRESQUE Isle, Maine – Maine Maritime volleyball beat UMaine-Presque Isle, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-9) in the final conference matchup of the season on Sunday afternoon. First-year, Ila Smith (Lexington, Ky.) hit .750 for nine kills on the afternoon, while Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied a game-high 11 kills to help lead the Mariners to victory.
 
How it Happened: The first set was the most competitive between the two teams. There was a lot of back-and-forth action, before separated themselves enough to win the first. The Mariners started building momentum in the second set, scoring seven straight points early on in the match and never looked back. In the third set, Maine Maritime caught fire, leading 15-1 at one point in the set to finish strong and claim a 3-0 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Smith hit .750 for nine kills, along with two digs, one solo block, and a block assist.
  • Melampy had 11 kills, 11 digs, three aces, two block assists, and a solo block.
  • Katie Albritton dished out 27 assists, five digs, three kills, and one ace.
  • Makenna Middleton (Peoria, Ill.) tallied 11 digs and a game-high seven aces.
  • Makayla Miskiewicz recorded seven kills and five digs, while Hailey Kelly dished out seven assists.
 
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 18-2 on the year and finish up conference play with a unblemished 8-0 record to claim the top spot in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division tournament. The Owls went 3-5 in conference, coming in at the fourth spot in the East. Maine Maritime will host the East Division Tournament on Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. The winner out of the East Division will travel to the West Division winner for the NAC Championship that next week, November 5.
