Second Half Surge Lifts Mariners Over Broncos

DELHI, NY – Olivia Pye (Rangeley, Maine) and Kirra Magaña (Miami, Fla.) score two goals in under seven minutes late in the second half to lead the Mariners to a 2-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory against SUNY Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened: It was a quiet first half for each team, as both squads were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. SUNY Delhi got things going in the second half when they scored in the 57th minute off a corner kick to make the score 1-0. After about 20 minutes of back-and-forth action, Pye was able to put the Mariners on the board when she scored off a rebound from a corner kick to knot the game at 1-1. The score didn't stay that way for long, as Magaña tracked down a deflected ball and put it in the top right corner of the net seven minutes later to put the Mariners up by one with 4:30 left in regulation. The Mariners hung on to their lead long enough to capture a 2-1 victory.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Pye scored her first career goal, while Magaña records her sixth of the season.
  • Maine Maritime held a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks over the Broncos.
  • Bess MacArthur (Castine, Maine) recorded three saves for the Mariners.
  • Andraya Hunt tallied three saves in net for the Broncos.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 6-5-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while the Broncos fall to 2-6-4 overall and 1-3-2 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, October 15 at 2:30pm for senior day when they host UMaine-Farmington in a conference matchup.
