CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's basketball falls to the University of Southern Maine, 65-71 in Smith Gym during their home opener.

How it Happened: The Mariners jumped to a quick start, taking a 14-3 lead against the Huskies. USM continued to claw their back into the game, knotting the game at 26-26 with seven minutes left on the clock. The Huskies managed to take the lead with a score of 41-37 going into the half.

The Mariners kept fighting back in the second half, getting within two points but it was never enough. The Huskies eventually took a 71-65 point victory.

Inside the Numbers:
- Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) recorded a double-double with game-highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds, in addition to a steal and block.
- Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) added 12 points to the mix, shooting 50% from three, three rebounds, one assist, and a steal.
- Isaiah Oquendo (Orlando, Fla.) recorded 11 points, three assists, and one steal off the bench.
- Tommy Whelan tallied 16 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Huskies.
- Jason Lombard added 11 points and seven rebounds.
- The Mariners shot 43.1% from the floor and 30.4% from three point land, while USM shot 47.4% from the hardwood and 32.1% from beyond the arc.
