Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse fell to University of New England (UNE), 14-5 in their non-conference season opener.
How it Happened: The Nor'easters opened up the game with a 7-0 run before Ian Haines (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored his first career goal to put the Mariners on the board and bring the two teams into halftime with a score of 7-1.
The Nor'easters started off the second half with a goal and Maine Maritime answered when Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) found Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) for his first career goal to make the score 8-2. After two more goals from the Nor'easters, the Mariners scored back-to-back goals from Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine), assisted by Riley Morin (Harpswell, Maine), and Chandler Coombs (Brunswick, Maine) to make it 10-4 with 5:59 remaining in the third period. UNE added four more goals and then Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.) ended the afternoon for the Mariners with his first career goal to make the final score 14-5 in favor of the Nor'easters.
Inside the Numbers: Haines led the Mariners with a goal, five ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Nichol, Coombs, Tocci, and Reddington each added a goal, while Wilson and Morin each had one assist.
Andrew Lawrence led the Nor'easters with a game-high five goals, while Ryan Hazard and Jordan White each chipped in two. Gavin Tanis picked up five ground balls and Lawrence also caused three turnovers.
Ethan Snowman (Sarasota, Fla.) tallied six saves in net, while Zach McCarthy (Malvern, Pa.) picked up two in 15 minutes of relief for the Mariners. Matt Deyette recorded 13 saves for the Nor'easters.
UNE held a 39-26 advantage over the Mariners, as well as a 40-33 advantage in ground balls.
