Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse fell to Massachusetts Maritime, 14-7 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened: The Buccaneers got off to a quick start, scoring four goals in the first quarter. Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) put the Mariners on the board in the second quarter with his first goal of the afternoon, assisted by Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine). Mass. Maritime answered with six straight goals before Stewart Farnham (Portsmouth, R.I.) found Owen Hansen (Bennington, Vt.) for a goal to send the teams into halftime with a score of 10-2 in favor of the Buccaneers.
The Mariners started strong in the second half when Tocci scored off a pass from Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) and Jacob Belanger (Brunswick, Maine) found the back of the net to make the score 10-4. The Buccaneers then scored four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 14-4 with 10:31 left in the game. The Mariners finished the game strong when Tocci found Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.) for his only goal of the game, Belanger found Wilson for a goal, and Wilson assisted Caden White (Woodstock, Vt.) for a man-up goal to end the afternoon.
Inside the Numbers: Tocci led the Mariners with two goals, one assist, four ground balls, and one caused turnover. Wilson added another goal, along with two assists and two ground balls. Ian Haines (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picked up a game-high nine ground balls and tied the game-high three caused turnovers.
Mitchell Maida led the Buccaneers with five goals, four assists, three ground balls, and one caused turnover. Spencer Jones added four goals, three ground balls, and one caused turnover. Brian Rosher picked up a team-high eight ground balls and James Cassidy caused three turnovers.
Zach McCarthy (Malvern, Pa.) tallied 15 saves on the afternoon for the Mariners, while Sean Lally recorded 16 for the Buccaneers.
Mass. Maritime held a 49-33 advantage in shots, while Maine Maritime held a 37-36 advantage in ground balls.
