Mariners Have a Record Day Against SUNY Cobleskill

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse beat SUNY Cobleskill, 23-7 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened: Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) put the Mariners on the board when Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) found him for his first goal of the afternoon. Tocci then found Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.) for a goal, and Jacob Belanger (Brunswick, Maine) found the back of the net to make the score 3-0. Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) then found Alex Stevens (South Portland, Maine) and Caden White (Woodstock, Vt.) for a man-up goal each, then Wilson found Stevens for a man-down goal to make the score 6-0 with 8:04 left in the first quarter. SUNY Cobleskill answered with two quick goals, then Nichol and Wilson scored a goal each to end the first quarter with a score of 8-2. The Fighting Tigers started the second quarter with two goals before the Mariners went on a five goal run; three from Stevens, one from Belanger, and one from Nichol. SUNY Cobleskill ended the first half with a man-up goal to make the score 13-5 in favor of the Mariners.

The Mariners continued to dominate the third quarter, scoring six goals; three from Stevens, two from Wilson, and one from Tocci. Maine Maritime continued scoring in the fourth quarter, with Stevens scoring his ninth goal of the night. Chandler Coombs (Brunswick, Maine) found the back of the net to extend their lead to 21-5 before SUNY Cobleskill scored two more goals. Stevens then went on to score two more for the Mariners, setting a Maine Maritime single game record for goals per game with 11 goals and claiming a 23-7 win.

Inside the Numbers: The Mariners were led by Stevens with 11 goals, two assists, and one ground ball. Wilson added four goals and six assists and Tocci chipped in one goal and four assists, each surpassing the 100 points milestone for the men's lacrosse program. Ian Haines (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had a game-high three caused turnovers.

SUNY Cobleskill was led by Giovanni Bevacqua, Sean D'Amaro, and Gregory Neumann with two goals each. John Williams and D'Amaro picked up four ground balls each.

Zach McCarthy (Malvern, Pa.) spent 45 minutes in goal, recording four saves before Andrew King (Towson, Md.) took over for 15 minutes, tallying three saves. John Williams had 16 saves and Sean McMahan recorded 18 saves for the Fighting Tigers.

The Mariners held a 74-23 advantage in shots and a 49-24 advantage in ground balls over the Fighting Tigers.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in conference, while SUNY Cobleskill falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, April 2 at 12:00 pm when they host Rivier in a non-conference matchup.
