BRUNSWICK, Maine - Mariners Sailing traveled to Brunswick, Maine to compete in the Harpswell Sound Team Race hosted by Bowdoin College last weekend. Sailors Luke Healy (Lakewood, Ohio), Tristan Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.), Mott Blair (Wallace, N.C.), Arden Astin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Olivia Mitchell (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Robert Jacobs (Denton, Md.), Zachary York (Sewell, N.J.), and Ella Beauregard (Southport Island, Maine) represented the Mariners.
Saturday morning began with a light, but building southerly, a little right of the usual sea-breeze for Harpswell Sound. The Mariners started the first two rounds 4th of 8, with strong races as the breeze and waves built. The Mariners had some struggles converting 2-3-6 a few times, leading to dropped races against Tufts and Bowdoin. As the breeze died in the afternoon and the current increased, the Mariners had difficulty getting over the start line cleanly, and finished 0 and 4 in the last round of the day.
After a brief delay on Sunday, the typical wind direction filled, and the Mariners opened Round 1 finishing 2nd for 4, before the breeze died and racing was suspended for the regatta. Maine Maritime finished 4th of 5 at the regatta.
Maine Maritime Sailing continues next weekend at the Jumbo Team Race hosted by Tufts University.
