Astbury Breaks Single-Game Record for Faceoffs Won While Mariners Cruise Past Eagles

BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse beat Husson University, 27-9 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup Wednesday evening.

How it Happened: Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) put the Mariners on the board when he scored an unassisted goal to start the first quarter. Husson quickly answered with a goal of their own to tie it up before the Mariners scored six consecutive goals from Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine), Evan Golembeske (New Milford, Conn.) assisted by Alex Stevens (South Portland), Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.), Jacob Belanger (Brunswick, Maine), Stewart Farnham (Portsmouth, R.I.) assisted by Stevens, and Wilson. The Eagles scored a man-down goal, then the Mariners ended the quarter when Jed Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) found Golembeske for a goal and Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.) found the back of the net to make the score 9-2. Belanger started off the second quarter with a goal before the Eagles quickly answered with a goal from Sean Lyne. Astbury and Wilson then hit back-to-back goals before Husson scored with one of their own to make the score 12-4. Wilson quickly scored again off a pass from Astbury and Husson found the back of the net directly after. The Mariners then ended the second quarter with two man-up goals from Belanger and Wilson, and Tocci and Nichol each scored to extend the Mariners lead to 12 at the end of the first half.

Stevens started off the second half with a man-down goal, before Husson scored back-to-back goals. Belanger found the back of the net for his fourth of the night before Husson quickly answered with a goal. Maine Maritime then score eight straight goals, three from Wilson and one from Astbury, Riley Morin (Harpswell, Maine), Caden White (Woodstock, Vt.), Tocci, Belanger, and Nichol. The Eagles scored one more goal before the Mariners claimed a 27-9 victory.

Inside the Numbers: Wilson led the Mariners with seven goals off seven shots, three ground balls, and one assist. Belanger added five goals and one caused turnover, while Tocci chipped in three goals and four ground balls. Astbury won 25 faceoffs, breaking the Maine Maritime single-game record for faceoffs won. He also tallied a game-high 13 ground balls, along with two goals and two assists.

Gunner McAllister led the Eagles with three goals and one assist, along with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Jaden Wells chipped in three ground balls, two goals, and one assist. McAllister and Brandon Grondin each recorded three caused turnovers.

Zach McCarthy (Malvern, Pa.) tallied 11 saves in 45 minutes of play, while Andrew King (Towson, Md.) recorded three in 15 minutes. Bryan Wagg tallied nine saves in 60 minutes for the Eagle.

The Mariners held a 61-43 advantage in shots and a 63-44 advantage in ground balls over the Eagles.


Up Next: The Mariners improve to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in conference, while Husson University falls to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:00pm when they host Thomas College in a conference matchup.
