Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse beat Thomas College, 31-1 in a Purple Heart Game and North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup Wednesday evening.
How it Happened: The Mariners set the tone for the game early, scoring eight unanswered goals in the first quarter. Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) started off with an unassisted goal and Zeke Tocci (Naples, Maine) followed up with two quick back-to-back goals to make the score 3-0. Wilson scored again off a pass from Caden White (Woodstock, Vt.), then Jacob Belanger (Brunswick, Maine), Wilson, and Alex Stevens (South Portland, Maine) all scored unassisted goals and Wilson assisted Evan Golembeske (New Milford, Conn.) for a goal to end the first quarter with an 8-0 lead. Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) started off the second quarter with a man-up goal from Stevens, and Tocci hit two more goals to make the score 11-0. Noah Caramihalis (York, Maine) then scored his first career goal, while Wilson and Nichol each found the back of the net. Jed Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) scored a man-up goal, before Stevens, Tocci, Wilson, then Stevens again scored one goal each to end the first half with a score of 19-0 in favor of the Mariners
Tocci found Wilson to begin the second half, before Thomas College scored their only goal of the night. Chandler Coombs (Brunswick, Maine) then scored his first goal of the night, before Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.) scored off a pass from Riley Morin (Harpswell, Maine), and Tocci found the back of the net off a pass from Wilson to make the score 23-1. Stewart Farnham (Portsmouth, R.I.) then scored his only goal of the night, before Belanger, White, and Wilson each scored a goal. Wilson Higgins (Glenburn, Maine) and Graycen Hayes-Begley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) each scored their first career goals, before Stevens scored back-to-back man-up goals to set a new Maine Maritime men's lacrosse single-game record for goals in a game with 31 and to claim a 31-1 victory over the Terriers.
Inside the Numbers: The Mariners were led by Wilson who scored seven goals and dished out four assisted, while picking up three ground balls and causing three turnovers. Tocci added six goals and four assists, while Stevens chipped in five goals and two assists. Belanger and Nichol added two goals each. Astbury picked up a game-high 14 ground balls and won 23 faceoffs, while Ian Haines (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tied the game-high five caused turnovers.
Max Irons led the Terriers with their only goal of the evening. Dominic Desimone and Hunter Crocker picked up four ground balls each and Desimone tied the game-high five caused turnovers.
Andrew King (Towson, Md.) picked up the win for the Mariners tallying one save, while Zach McCarthy (Malvern, Pa.) finished out the second half recording five saves. Daniel Guarino tallied seven saves and Patrick Buxton recorded eight saves for the Terriers.
The Mariners held a 71-10 advantage in shots and a 53-26 advantage in ground balls over the Terriers.
