Mariners Sailing traveled to Tufts University this weekend to compete at the Jumbo Team Race. Sailors Luke Healy (Lakewood, Ohio), Tristan Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.), Mott Blair (Wallace, N.C.), Olivia Mitchell (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Robert Jacobs (Denton, Md.), Zachary York (Sewell, N.J.), and Ella Beauregard (Southport Island, Maine) represented the Mariners.
Saturday began with a 20-30kt Northerly, which was difficult to Team Race in because it led to a lot of chaotic mark-traps and pass-backs. Mostly in fleet racing, where the successful teams were those who were able to get off the line cleanly, and sail the whole race without capsizing. As the wind subsided throughout the day, the Mariners converted their 0-8 record, and began to win races, and be competitive again. The big difference being confident boat handling as the breeze backed off.
Sunday began with the completion of a seeding round, after which Maine Maritime was seeded 5th, behind Connecticut College. A double round-robin petit-final was scheduled, between Salve-Regina, Connecticut College, and Maine Maritime. After losing race one to Salve Regina, the Mariners won the final 3 races, to finish 3rd overall.
Maine Maritime sailing will return to action next weekend when they host the NE Dinghy Tournament Fleet Race.
